good debater. i'm just okay. >> president obama is a very -- he's a very gifted speaker. the man's been on the national stage for many years. he's an experienced debater. he's done these kinds of debates before. this is mitt's first time on this kind of a stage. >> flashpoint libya, the white house on the defensive after reports of both security and intelligence nurse in benghazi before that terror attack. >> standing up, sitting down. >> which ever one you like. >> there you go. >> do whatever they tell us. >> the white house line is you heard the president say, osama bin laden is dead, al qaeda is done, everything is fine in the middle east. this, obviously, contradicts -- ther series of events contradicts that campaign slogan. so, the fact is, that this was clearly an act of terror committed by people who were pretty well trained jihadists. >> more carnage in afghanistan. the taliban take responsibility for a suicide attack that killed 14 today including three americans. we are deployed in the hot spots today with lester holt live in afghanistan and ann curry on the syrian borde

insider's perspective, the president's debate preparations, robert gibbs, senior adviser to the obama campaign and the president's former press secretary. you have been there, done that. you know this president. you know him as a candidate. what is going on behind the scenes today? >> well look, i know they're doing, you know, they're doing some prep, some mock debates, obviously, you know, the president's got a very busy day job that's taking him away from time to do this sort of thing and quite frankly it's been four years, you know, since he's been in this arena. so i know he's anxious and excited to get in front of the american people and talk specifics about the issues, to talk about how we continue to build this economy and strengthen it going forward over the course of the next four years. >> and in terms of the defense that he has to play, the romney team are attacking him for not creating a budget, in three years, of course the argument the counter argument would be the republicans for three out of the four years were in charge and -- at least one house, and were blocking him

denver where mitt romney took the fight to president obama in wednesday's debate. last night it was the president who often seemed remote and disengaged. joining me now on the phone from the president's speech that he's just had in denver is chuck todd, of course, traveling with the president. chuck, what's the explanation from team obama as to how ill prepared the president seemed to be for this? i think chuck todd is with the president. i guess they've just taken off. we're joined now for our daily fix with chris cillizza, msnbc contributor and managing edter of post politics.com and ruth marcus and politico editor in chief, john harris. chris, first to you. your scoring of the debate and what you think the president's strategy was or wasn't going in. >> i don't know what his strategy was, but whatever it was, it wasn't particularly good, andrea. you know, the thing that i was struck by the whole time is optics matter. this is television. how you look, how you present yourself matters. barack obama, honestly, kind of looked like he would have rather have been almost anywhere but there

in front of the whole nation. if the obama campaign can win the post debate they can make up some ground in the next couple of days in terms of what happened last night. >> and andrea, i don't disagree. i think the next couple of days are crucial for the romney campaign. they've got to put more meat on the bones and let people know his record in massachusetts has someone who could govern in a bipartisan way and get effective legislation done, that's important. telling the full story on taxes, how you don't want to have a big massive tax cut for rich people. if you get rid of that talking point for the democrats they that's a bonus for the romney campaign. the romney campaign has to be aggressive in the post debate setting to make sure that they are getting their points across because you know the obama team is going hard against them and this is where it's going to be won or lost. >> one of the things that mitt romney did last night, he was giving personal examples of speaking to this person who had a problem, or this person who had a problem, people he met along the trail. he tal

there in the air before october 16th and the next debate. my guess what he'll do, when barack obama almost assuredly attacks him in the october 16th debate he will say that's old news, i've apologized for it, made a mistake, an interesting way, barack obama allowed mitt romney to frame it the way he wants which is clearly a damaging moment for mitt romney's campaign, he's trying to move beyond it, and i think this is his attempt to do so, though, my guess is barack obama will not let this apology be the last word on it. >> and also get ahead of it before the vice presidential debate because you know joe biden was going to go after it. still inexplicable why the president didn't use it wednesday night. thank you so much, chris. see you later. joining me now to dig deeper into the jobs data, u.s. economic economist for the president. >> definitely good news in the context of all the bad news in recent months. the headline growth of employment of 114,000 was good but not spectacular. if you dig deeper you find they revised up prior months so running around 150,000 per month, somewhat b

concerned about obama/romney this was a heck of a debate and if you love politics it's one to look up on-line. it was quite something to watch. >> indeed. looks like you had a great time as well. thank you. >> we did. >> and up next, the politico briefing, the pitfalls to avoid tomorrow night. stay with us. [ male announcer ] along with support, chantix is proven to help people quit smoking. it reduces the urge to smoke. some people had changes in behavior, thinking or mood, hostility, agitation, depressed mood and suicidal thoughts or actions while taking or after stopping chantix. if you notice any of these stop taking chantix and call your doctor right away. tell your doctor about any history of depression or other mental health problems, which could get worse while taking chantix. don't take chantix if you've had a serious allergic or skin reaction to it. if you develop these stop taking chan

site of tonight's presidential debate, the first time in five years that barack obama and mitt romney are going to be face-to-face in what the local newspaper is headlining as the duel in denver. joining me now for our daily fix, chris cizilla, msnbc contributor and managing editor of post politics.com. first of all, this, the big face-off, let's talk about the state of the race. we have new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll numbers showing a slight tightening in the race. fou looks as though mitt romney is in the national polls slightly narrowing the gap. other problems within those numbers, problems for romney. >> yeah. i mean first of all let me say i love duel in denver. i'm a big fan of that one. i think andrea, look, last week there was a ton of polling both in swing states and nationally that i think caught barack obama sort of at the apex of the bounce he had received post-convention and post a couple bad weeks for mitt romney and mitt romney at the nader of where he could possibly be in a race where you have the country as divided as it is. the fact that things are moving b
